Growing up and even during our teena.ge years, we are told that Marijuana is a very dangerous and addictive drug. Authoritative figures whether it be our parents, teacher, the media (usually) influences into believing that it truly risky and that it can destroy our lives. Apparently, it is even noted to be more dangerous than other recreational drugs such as alcohol. It is indeed true that many Governments have led people into believing that if they consume marijuana, that they are at higher risk than consuming alcohol for example. However, a new study indicates that smoking marijuana is approximately about 114 times safer than consuming alcohol. In fact, alcohol is categorized to be the deadliest drug on an individual level. Well, at least, it has been when the likelihood of someone passing away due to them overdosing is being talked about. Besides alcohol, Heroin and Cocaine were the next most lethal substances with Tobacco right under them as well as Ecstacy and Meth.
“The results confirm that the risk of cannabis may have been overestimated in the past,” the report reads. “At least for the endpoint of mortality, the [margin of exposure] for THC/cannabis in both individual and population-based assessments would be above safety thresholds (e.g. 100 for data based on animal experiments). In contrast, the risk of alcohol may have been commonly underestimated.”
The Washington Post reported that the study’s results are not exactly so new as they confirm similar findings that were reported 10 years ago. According to Wayne Hall of the World Health Organization, it impossible for someone who smokes large amounts of cannabis to overdose.
“The estimated fatal dose [of THC, the primary active compound in marijuana] in humans derived from animal studies is between 15 and 70 grams. This is a far greater amount of cannabis that even a very heavy cannabis user could use in a day,” Hall wrote last year.Overall, Alcohol is one class A1 carcinogen (confirmed human carcinogens) regardless of the type of alcohol. It doesn’t matter how much one consumes, Alcohol will always be a carcinogen.
“Currently, the MOE results point to risk management prioritization towards alcohol and tobacco rather than illicit drugs,” the report reads.“The high MOE values of cannabis, which are in a low-risk range, suggest a strict legal regulatory approach rather than the current prohibition approach.”
10 REASONS CANNABIS IS SAFER THAN ALCOHOL
1. Many people die from alcohol use. Nobody dies from cannabis use.According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 37,000 deaths have occurred from solely alcohol. However, even though many find it controversial, the CDC doesn’t even accounts for deaths caused from marijuana.
2. People die from alcohol overdoses. There has never been a fatal cannabis overdose.
We hear it often how people die from alcohol overdoses. American Scientist indicated that alcohol is a very toxic drug above so many. On the other hand, Cannabis doesn’t even compare in toxicity next to Alcohol. In reality, there hasn’t really been a case where someone died from a cannabis overdose.
3. The health-related costs associated with alcohol use far exceed those for cannabis use.
According to an assessment published in the British Columbia Mental Health and Addictions Journal, it technically costs more to buy alcohol than to buy Cannabis. It has been reported that usually people spend $165 on alcohol and this is solely one user. While usually people who purchase Cannabis only spend up to$20.
4. Alcohol use damages the brain. Cannabis use does not.
Despite the myths we’ve heard throughout our lives about cannabis killing brain cells, it turns out that a growing number of studies seem to indicate that cannabis actually has neuroprotective properties. What this means is that Cannabis actually works in order to protect brain cells from harm. Studies have proven that very low doses of THC can jumpstart biochemical processes which protect brain cells and preserve cognitive function. Therefore, we can infer that marijuana might help instead of harm.
5. Alcohol use is linked to cancer. Cannabis use is not.
Believe it or not, alcohol is associated with a variety of cancers. Some of these include cancers of the esophagus, stomach, colon, lungs, pancreas, liver, and prostate. On the other hand, cannabis has not been associated with any cancers at this point. Instead, it has been known to reduce such cancers like neck cancers.
6. Alcohol is more addictive than cannabis.
Addiction is a word that isn’t really used much to refer towards people being hooked on a drug. Therefore, the new word commonly used is “dependency”. Or in other words, to say that usually those who drink alcohol usually become more dependent than those who smoke or consume cannabis. Those people who tend to use alcohol may build up the tolerance for it therefore, they ill increase more and more alcohol because their bodies are so used to consuming it.
7. Alcohol use increases the risk of injury to the consumer. Cannabis use does not.
Many people who have consumed alcohol or know others who have consumed alcohol would not be surprised to hear that it greatly increases the risk of serious injury. There was a research that was published recently stating that 36% of hospitalized assaults and 21 percent of all injuries had links to alcohol use by the injured person. This means that people who drink may get violent and may even begin to attack others leaving them injured. However, cannabis rarely contributes to violence whereas it has been noted that those who consume alcohol have been known as those who wanted to cause self-harm, domestic accidents, and overall violence.
8. Alcohol use contributes to aggressive and violent behavior. Cannabis use does not.
Studies have repeatedly shown that alcohol, unlike cannabis, contributes to the likelihood of the aggressive and violent behavior. Journal of Addictive Behaviors reported that “alcohol is clearly the drug with the most evidence to support a direct intoxication-violence relationship,” whereas “cannabis reduces the likelihood of violence during intoxication.”
9. Alcohol use is a major factor in violent crimes. Cannabis use is not.
According to The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 25-30% of violent crimes in the US are also linked to alcohol. Apparently, about 5,000,000 alcohol-related violent crimes per year. In regards to this, the government does even categorize violence with cannabis use.
10 Alcohol use contributes to the likelihood of domestic abuse and sexual assault. Cannabis use does not.
As mentioned before, because alcohol tends to be a factor as to why people get aggravated, it is likely that domestic violence and sexual assault might happen. According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN)website highlights alcohol as the “most commonly used chemical in crimes of sexual assault” and provides information on an array of other drugs that have been linked to sexual violence. Given the fact that cannabis is so accessible and widely used, it is quite telling that the word “cannabis” does not appear anywhere on the page.
